Learn to Silver Solder Steel Parts with SSQ6 Silver Solder Paste

Steel is one of the most common metals utilized in industrial applications, therefore, learning to silver solder steel is a skill well worth having.

Steel is an alloyed metal, created by combining silicon, boron, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, vanadium, silicon, and other lesser known metals.   Its names and qualities differ based on the various combinations available:  spring steel, low alloy steel, high alloy steel, carbide steel, stainless steel, tool steel, mild steel, carbon steel, and manganese steel, to name a few.  A good rule of thumb is the higher the carbon content, the stronger the steel.

Inexpensive, thermal and corrosion resistant, high strength, and sustainable, steel in its various forms can be found nearly everywhere:

  • Automotive
  • Construction
  • Mechanical Equipment
  • Architecture
  • Shipbuilding
  • Railroad
  • Aircraft
  • Mining
  • Energy Production
  • Home Appliances
  • Surgical Equipment
  • Farm Equipment

Copper and steel pipes often require bonding, however, the average handyman has had difficulty in the past soldering these dissimilar metals.  We offer SSQ-6 as the solution for silver soldering steel in all its forms–to other types of steel as well as copper, brass, bronze, cast iron etc.  SSQ-6 is the paste version of our SSF-6 Silver Solder rods.

To demonstrate how easy soldering steel to copper can be, Mike is silver soldering a 1/8″ steel plate to a copper end cap with SSQ-6 56% silver solder paste and a propane torch.

Technique is essential.  Always clean both the copper and the steel well before starting the brazing process, to ensure a proper bond.  As you can see, SSQ-6 paste is easily applied with a syringe on cold metals, making it a no mess solution for all your steel silver soldering applications.

Proper use of the torch will determine the success of your repair.  It is important to broadly heat the metal rather than directly heating the metal, to slowly bring the steel to proper working temperature.

NotePlease observe all AWS Safety & Health Guidelines when using Muggy Weld products.

Caution: Do not store near edible items. If you refrigerate SSQ-6, please store in a “chemical only” designated refrigerator.
