Stainless steel solder repair projects are an easy task thanks to SSF-6 silver solder rods.

Whether you’re working on an automotive, restaurant, marine, hospital, plumbing, or HVAC application, this versatile stainless steel solder rod is effective for bonding stainless to copper, or any of the following metals individually or in any combination:

  • cast iron
  • stainless steel
  • brass
  • copper
  • bronze
  • mild steel
  • carbide
  • carbon steel
  • spring steel
  • manganese steel
  • chrome-moly
  • carbon-moly
  • galvanized iron
  • cadmium coated steel
  • German steel
  • inconel
  • cupronickel
  • silicone bronze
  • silver
  • gold
  • cast steel

And SSF-6 is the only fluxed silver solder that’s strong enough to wet burned stainless and clean oxidized stainless steel.

For this demonstration, we joined stainless steel tubing to copper tubing with SSF-6 stainless steel solder and a hand held propane torch. As you can see, the silver solder flows very well and finishes with no pinholes or porosity–with a strength of over 70,000 psi.

Steps to stainless steel brazing:
Create and secure joint to be bonded
Clean all parent metals well before soldering
Broadly heat the parent metals until you just start to see the metal turn red
Deposit a small amount of flux and flow it into the joint
Add the stainless steel solder directly to the joint
Allow the part to cool naturally
Remove excess flux with warm water and a wire brush
Polish and finish as necessary

The end result is a joint that’s a perfect color match for the stainless steel.

SSF-6 56% silver solder is cadmium free, food grade, pharmaceutical safe. SSF-6 also works fantastic on copper nickel or cupro nickel as used in the marine industry.

ProTip: When choosing a torch, a propane torch is adequate if it can bring the parent metals to the 1150°F working temperature. Large pieces or thick metal may require oxyacetylene to achieve proper flow. If your stainless steel solder rod is not flowing properly, you may need to choose a different torch.
