Tom, a classic car enthusiast, brought this 1933-34 Dodge Ram radiator cap/hood ornament to a Northwest car show hoping there was a way to fix this rare chrome piece of Art Deco. Although he had been told numerous times that pot metal was un-repairable and he should just throw it away, Tom approached Mike Muggy with the hood ornament and asked if Super Alloy 1 could do the job.

 

This broken Dodge Ram radiator cap/hood ornament valued at $2500 was designed by the sculptor Avard T. Fairbanks. Fairbanks was commissioned by the Dodge Corporation to design hood ornaments for their vehicles, in an attempt to compete with the exquisite Rolls Royce craftsmanship.

 

 

We first cleaned the oxidation from the pot metal part with sand paper and a wire brush. Pot metal will oxidize very quickly, so it's important to make your repair or weld within an hour of cleaning. Before aligning the ram to its base, we painted the Super Alloy 1 flux to all four cleaned surfaces.

 

 

Tom held the Ram in place while Mike applied the Super Alloy 1 solder to restore it to its upright position. A propane torch with a light flame was an adequate heat source to mend the antique zinc die cast part. Always dip the rod into the flux--the solder works best when fluxed liberally. Tom was pleased that the Super Alloy 1 had a similar color to the chrome plating of the ornament.

 

 

The part was cooled naturally, as dipping it into water will shock the pot metal and can weaken the solder joint. After the ornament was cooled, Mike used a wire brush and warm water to remove the flux, then picked the ornament up by the ram to show Tom the strength of Super Alloy 1. Tom was pleasantly surprised at the ease of repair, and remarked that more time was spent cleaning and aligning the part than soldering it.
