Antique Pot Metal Candelabra Repair

Testimonials

Mike,

These pics come from a new aerospace test facility that they are constructing at the University of Notre Dame. The SSF-6 is working great.

aluminum welding and metal repair

I am attempting to make all of these fittings air tight as they are used for pressure measurements. We can¹t have any leaks. I had very little warpage of my base metal and I think this is really going to work out very well.

We received this email on 3/10 which was featured in our Ask Mike column:

Question:

I have an application which involves a candelabra and leg off of an antique clock (around 1900). Im not sure if the metal is actually white/pot metal or cast iron. It seems too heavy to be white or pot metal. Would it be worth attempting with your product?

Answer:

You would need to determine what metal it is before we could tell you which rod to use. Put a magnet to it, if it sticks it may be cast iron, which will require either our SSF-6 brazing rods or 77 arc rods. If its pot metal, white metal or zinc die cast our Super Alloy 1 will repair it at half the metals melting point so you dont damage the antique.

This one was pot metal, which sometimes looks like aluminum but is much heavier.

The customer shipped this antique candelabra for repairs, as you can see, there were many broken pieces that needed reattached. Pot metal being so heavy and weak, the pieces broke off due to their own weight.

Two of the 3 broken pieces have been reattached at this point. We lightly sanded the pieces with a Dremel tool to expose the base metal before applying the Super Alloy 1. Our Cool Blue heat paste was used on the existing welds as each piece was attached, to eliminate any chance of the welds melting out on the re-heat.

This irreplaceable candleabra is good as new, and ready to be sanded and refinished.

TIPS:

Clean the area to be repaired well using a Dremel or sanding disc etc immediately before you make your repair. If it sits for more than a couple hours after cleaning it will oxidize and you will need to clean it again before soldering.

Wait for the flux to do its job before adding the rod, the flux will turn brown when ready.

Propane, mapp gas, butane and even oxyacetylene will work just turn the oxygen way down if you are using oxyacetylene.
