Welding a Cracked Cast Iron CASE Engine Block

Testimonials

Mike,

These pics come from a new aerospace test facility that they are constructing at the University of Notre Dame. The SSF-6 is working great.

aluminum welding and metal repair

I am attempting to make all of these fittings air tight as they are used for pressure measurements. We can¹t have any leaks. I had very little warpage of my base metal and I think this is really going to work out very well.

Cast iron has typically been difficult to repair due to the sensitivity of the nickel rod in the cool down process--the nickel rod causes alot of re-cracking as it hardens.

On heavy machinery, cast iron welding is a must, as parts are expensive and not easy to find on demand. A machine that breaks down today may not be running for several weeks if you have to wait for parts.

This crack in a cast iron CASE engine block measured 15 inches long, with the center measuring one inch high. The crack was caused by a thrown rod, and replacement was not an option.

Karl bevels the crack to prep the area.

Ready to weld.

We begin by welding the length of the crack with 77 cast iron welding rod

Larger areas are easily repaired by running pass after pass until filled.

Another successful repair made possible by our 77 cast iron electrode.

TIPS:

IMPORTANT: Never weld more than 2 inches at a time and allow cast to cool for 2 minutes between passes. For some cast irons you may only want to weld an inch or less and let cool 1 minute between passes.

Low and slow is the key to a sound cast iron weld.
