Aluminum Boat Holes Repaired with Oxyacetylene

Testimonials

Mike,

These pics come from a new aerospace test facility that they are constructing at the University of Notre Dame. The SSF-6 is working great.

aluminum welding and metal repair

I am attempting to make all of these fittings air tight as they are used for pressure measurements. We can¹t have any leaks. I had very little warpage of my base metal and I think this is really going to work out very well.

We've recently received several emails asking about aluminum boat repair, so we decided to run a photo series on this project since it was such a popular inquiry.

Mike was doing a Muggyweld™ demonstration at Alternative Automotive. Steve, the owner said, "If Super Alloy 5 can fix my aluminum boat, I'll buy it".

This aluminum fishing boat was riddled with holes and in dire need of repair.

Corrosion was the major contributing factor in most of the holes in the aluminum.

This shot shows before & after making the weld. Mike made the repair to the far right, and after watching Mike's demonstration, Steve made the repairs in the middle.

Most aluminum welding rods melt at too high a temperature and cannot weld the thin aluminum without warpage. With a melting point of only 600 degrees, Super Alloy 5 was up to the challenge.

After sanding, notice the perfect color match with the aluminum. Now that Steve has Super Alloy 5, his boat will be back in the water in no time! Thanks Steve!

TIPS:

The flux is an absolute temperature guide, simply watch until it turns into a liquid and apply the rod.

Heat the base metal first, then the base metal and the rod.

Aluminum dissipates heat quickly, so its important to keep the flame broadly moving to ensure your base metal stays above 600 degrees.
